2010 Blues on the Red Debut!
The first of the 2010 Blues on the Red series made its debut Saturday, June 26 from 6 to 10pm, in Town Square and I was lucky enough to attend! It was an evening full of Blues!
The event kicked off with Stagedoor Johnny and continued with Blues on the Red headliner, The Everett Smithson Band, lead by Everett Smithson and his wife, Kathy.
Although the area was in a severe thunderstorm warning, Town Square was packed! The weather turned out to be perfect throughout the entire night and each band played for about two hours. Canad Inns Destination Center hosted a beer garden and food vending, with everything from pulled pork sandwiches, potato salad and huge cookies to water, pop and of course beer in the beer garden.
The next Blues on the Red will take plae July 24, 6 to 10pm in Townsquare, when The Blue Wailers will open, followed by headliner Davina & the Vagabonds. Judging by their websites, http://www.bluewailers.com and www.davinaandthevagabonds.com, these two bands are sure to produce an evening full of enjoyment!
Be sure to bring your own lawn chair or find a seat at one of the picnic tables provided, either way you are sure to enjoy the Blues music that fills the downtown area during this three-part series, which will conclude on August 28. Canad Inns will host food vending and a beer garden each month and admission is free to all.

ND Museum of Art Concerts in the Garden
For the fourth season, the ND Museum of Art has opened their grounds for the Concerts in the Garden series. There are five concerts occurring throughout the summer in the Museum's Sculpture Garden.I attended the first of the five, which featured local Bluegrass band, the North River Ramblers. As always, the Ramblers put on a great show with both originally written music and cover songs that everyone could sing along with. It was a beautiful Tuesday evening on the University of ND campus. The grill was going with outdoor picnic favorites like burgers and dogs. The garden was full of blankets and lawn chairs along with people of all ages include kids and babies. I highly recommend these events for young and old.
Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door (kids 12 and under are free). Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome. In the case of rain, the concerts will be moved inside. The rest of the season line up includes:
- July 6 at 6 p.m. - Hoots & Hellmouth
- July 20 at 6 p.m. - Alison Scott
- August 3 at 6 p.m. - Charlie Parr
- August 24 at 7 p.m. - Post Traumatic Funk Syndrome
