Blues on the Red

We attended the first ever 'Blues on the Red' event in Town Square this past Saturday. What a blast! The lead in artist was a group called Peatmoss and they played for almost 2 hours. The headliner was Little Bobby and the Storm. They also played for over 2 hours. Each band was unique in its own way and they played popular blues music plus some of thier own songs they had written. This first time event is sponsored by the Greater Grand Forks Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) & Canad Inns and run by a committee of people representing Town Sqare Farmer's Market, University of North Dakota, Urban Development, Empire Arts Center, Canad Inns and the CVB.

The weather was hot and the blues were cool! But people were able to cool off with a cold beverage whether is was water, pop or beer. There was a beer garden sponsored by the Canad Inns with many types of beer going for $5. The Canad Inns also sponsored the food for this event. There was BBQ brisket, ribs or chicken; pulled pork sandwiches and also hamburgers and hot dogs. Pop, water and chips were also available along with ice cream which was a big hit. Each plate of food came with a choice of two sides...all for $8. What is BBQ without the cornbread and corn on the cob? These were avialable too. The Canad Inns thought of everything.

There was plenty of space to bring your own lawn chair if you didn't want to sit at a picnic table. Town Square has plenty of tents surrounding the perimeter and there was a large tent inside the beer garden. I know that next time there will be even more tables and tents. There were over 500 people who attended this first time event.

The next 'Blues on the Red' will be Saturday, September 20, 2008. The event will run from 5-10 p.m. and there will again be food and beer available. Come join the fun in downtown Grand Forks! Admission if free.

Family Fun at RiverCities Speedway

Family Fun at RiverCities Speedway!

Are you a race fan?  You won’t want to miss the race excitement at one of the top dirt tracks in the upper Midwest.  It’s great!  Every Friday night they have 4 classes of cars that race – Outlaw Sprints, Late Models, Midwest Modifieds, & street class!

Hot laps start at 6:30 pm with the races beginning at 7:30.  Don’t worry about eating dinner before you come.  The food concessions have a great selection and you can also take in the beer gardens if you wish.  You can register for door prizes given away throughout the evening as well as buy a chance for the 50/50 drawing which is split between the winner and the drivers point fund.

Following the heat races they have a big candy toss for the kids during the intermission. After the races everyone is invited over to the pit area to meet and talk with the drivers.  Many of them have pictures they autograph and give to the kids and some even have temporary tattoos of their cars as well for the kids as well as adults!

You can save $3.00 with advance tickets.  They are available at: El Roco, Home of Economy, Tesoro East, University Station, and Gateway Cenex, & Stamart.  Ticket prices are: Adults $16 (at the gate); ages 7-12 $5.00; and 6 and under are free.  A Family Pass is available that will save you $15.00 (for 2 adults and 3 kids).

If you are traveling with a camper, race fans can camp free of charge at the track!
