Forksful of weekend fun
Sadly, summer is coming to an end but in these two towns, we plan on sending that season out with a bang! This weekend alone, here are just five of many SimplyGrand to-dos:
GET BOWLED OVER. One of our region’s most popular festivals celebrating one of our most popular staple crops, Potato Bowl Week USA offers up a spudtacular time for all September 5-9! Some of the highlights include the World’s Largest French Fry Feed & Fireworks Display on Thursday and Get Wet & Run Wild! Kids Fun Run on Friday. The week culminates Saturday with a Potato Pancake Breakfast (7:30 AM to 1 PM at Sons of Norway), Parade (10 AM down University Avenue), Tailgate Party (beginning at 8 AM in Alerus Center parking lot) and the 52nd Annual Potato Bowl Football Game featuring our UND Fighting Hawks taking on Missouri State (4 PM kick-off at Alerus Center).
STOP, SHOP & ROCK. September 8 and 9, from 11 AM to 6 PM on Friday and 9 AM to 6 PM on Saturday, DeMers & 3rd will be hoppin’ during the 2nd Annual Downtown Street Fair! Dozens of food trucks will be on hand, as well as a variety of product vendors selling everything from homemade marmalade to handwoven handbags. Listen to live tunes both nights in Town Square, with Friday marking a return of the popular JLG Rock the Streets event featuring Wicked Bees and The Fabulous Armadillos. Mics go live at 7 PM but food and beverage service starts up around 6:30 PM.
WALK IT OFF. Start out this Saturday morning, September 9, with some carbo-loading at Central High School (115 North 4th Street) during the Rotary Club Annual Pancake Feed. From 7:30 to 10:30 AM, $5 will getcha a big plate of tasty hotcakes! Then at 8 AM, departing from Central HS, join in on the free Go Grand Downtown Historical Walking Tour. This month’s tour focuses on how the upper Red River Valley became a metropolitan hub due in large part to its rich and prosperous soil/farmland.
STOCK UP DOWNTOWN. Taking place every Saturday, mid-June through September, from 9 AM to 1:30 PM, our Outdoor Farmers Market fills Town Square with locals and visitors seeking fresh produce. But it’s not only corn, cucumbers and carrots you’ll find…scrumptious fresh baked pies, cookies, sweet rolls and more are also available, if you get there before others snarf ‘em up! There will also be live entertainment on the main stage.
DOWN & DIRTY FUN. If you’re a fan of extreme racing, take note! The 2017 Uff Da Mud Run, September 9, is one awesome obstacle event. This challenging course will take you by and through the Red River. It starts and finishes near Sorlie Bridge in East Grand Forks. Registration information may be found at www.endracing.com.
