If you’re a fan of bouncing balls and like to shake your pompoms, a University of North Dakota basketball game is a must-attend event!  Even though the men’s and women’s programs are only in the third year of official DI status, they’re already a force to be reckoned with.    Picked to finish atop the Big Sky Conference, third-year head coach Travis Brewster will once again be directing a squad of very gifted young women.  Leading scorers Mia Lloyd and Emily Evers will light up the scoreboard, while fiery guards Kelsey Knox and Leah Szabla frustrate opponents with their quickness and tenacity.  UND also has a full slate of other potent weapons including sophomore Makailah Dyer and freshman Bailey Strand.   Veteran head coach Brian Jones takes his club into this season on the heels of a 12-8 record in 2013-14 and a postseason tournament appearance.  Starters Quinton Hooker and Jaron Nash head a team of skilled players at both the offensive and defensive ends of the court.  And the tall ‘n’ talented 7-0 freshman Carson Shanks is definitely one to watch.   Along with a chance to see two of the most exciting young teams in the country compete, …

Grand Forks is preparing to host the North Dakota State Class B Boys’ Basketball Tournament for the first time, March 1-3.  The Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) is asking for your help welcoming the athletes, coaches and fans to our simply grand community! As a proud sponsor of this event, the CVB is in the process of mailing welcome pins to all local restaurants and hotels.  Please have your employees wear these pins. In addition to the pins, the CVB printed and delivered welcome posters to 150 local businesses and will distribute welcome banners to all hotels next week. You may have also noticed the digital billboards on Washington/DeMers and at the Alerus Center have welcome messages displayed. How can you help? 1. Have your employees wear the welcome pins. 2. Hang welcome posters and/or banners in your business. 3. Display a welcome on your outdoor marquee. If you would like to request a supply of pins and posters or banners, e-mail Nicole at services@visitgrandforks.com.

Simply Grand Fall Fun

Japanese Garden at Sertoma Park

Weather predictions for this week in Greater Grand Forks are good with beautiful fall temperatures and sunny skies, so I highly recommend you get out and enjoy some of the recreational opportunities offered here including our gorgeous and fun parks. Japanese Garden – This lovely garden, located in Sertoma Park, was a gift from the residents of Awano Japan to commemorate the flood of 1997. Its natural look features the beauty of rocks, water, hills, trees as well as the three granite Japanese-style lanterns. Ali’s Boundless Playground – Local teen Ali Karpenko was born with spina bifida, and her dream of a community playground for children with and without disabilities was realized in 2009 in Sertoma Park. Here every child can play side by side at his or her own ability level. Greenway – The Greenway is 2,200 acres of natural space lining the Red River and Red Lake River as they flow through Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. The picturesque urban space offers countless recreational, cultural, historical and natural experiences. These recreational areas give you just a taste of what is available in Greater Grand Forks. There are so many specialty parks available year-round for a variety of …
