Vintage Grand Forks

Untitled-3

Today’s blog comes from Shel Zolkewich, a travel writer, blogger and friend to Greater Grand Forks.   If you’ve been visiting Grand Forks for a couple of decades or more, these destinations will be familiar. They’re tried and true places that have stood the test of time and garnered a loyal customer base. They’re all about quality, variety and deliciousness.   If you want to hang with locals, head to Speedway Grill & Bar. Tucked away on N 42nd Street, the spacious room is almost always packed with folks enjoying the blooming onion appetizer, prime rib special or two-for-one burger night.   The walleye dinner is a steal at $15. It comes with two sides (like all dinners), so be sure to include the baked beans which are a standout here. Dinners also come with a small loaf of warm bread—a nice touch. Get there before 6 pm and order a 25-ounce beer for $2.95. For me, a bowl of their outstanding chicken tortilla soup, a loaf of that warm bread and a big beer do the trick. But I seldom stop there because the ribs are just too good to pass up.   Occupying a corner of the Grand …

The Greater Grand Forks Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) wants to assist visitors in every way we can, so we are starting a new addition to our blog. We are asking members of our team as well as other members of the community to share with us their Five Favorites in the Forks. That way visitors can hear what the locals enjoy with some special hints. We are starting with Shelley who is the Communications Coordinator at the CVB. She is sharing her five picks for shopping, dining and things to do…   Little Bangkok – Lunch and dinner at Little Bangkok is always a great experience with a variety of Thai and Japanese dishes on the menu including an array of fresh sushi creations. Shelley’s faves include the DeMers Avenue (sushi roll), Drunken Noodles (entree) and Vinho Verde (wine). Macy’s – Shelley is always on the lookout for a deal in the coolest trends, and she finds them at Macy’s in the Columbia Mall. She also recommends using the 10% off International Visitor Pass that can be found on the Deals & Discounts section of our website. University of North Dakota Women’s Basketball and Volleyball – There is nothing …

2011 Hometown Heroes honored last night

Email
Tourism Contributor and Organization of the Year

Last night the Greater Grand Forks Convention & Visitors Bureau hosted our annual Hometown Heroes Awards Celebration. This gives the CVB team an opportunity to recognize and honor all the hardworking individuals and organizations we work with year after year. Without them we would not have as many visitors traveling to Grand Forks nor would we have so many events. The following individuals ann organizations were honored: Cheri Reitmeier (Canad Inns, Farmer’s Market and Blues on the Red) – Tourism Contributor of the Year Rick Defea (Road King Inn) – Hospitality Person of the Year River Cities Speedway (Monica Evavold) – Organization of the Year Kelly Rotar (Special Olympics of ND) – Event Organizer of the Year UND Writers Conference (Dr. Crystal Alberts) – Event of the Year The event was great fun even with the threat of a winter storm, which didn’t hit Grand Forks. It was held at the historic Empire Arts Center with catering from Al’s Grill.  Their tips and toast, queso dip, wraps and walleye fingers were a hit. The most eye-catching part of the event though had to be the stage, erected by HB Sound & Light. They did a fabulous job of taking our …
