Great grinds equal grand times

Seattle and Portland may have started the whole coffeehouse craze but Grand Forks has definitely perfected it!  All throughout our town we have several java joints (some locally owned, some national chains) ready to brew you up a cup of caffeine filled deliciousness.  Each has a little something different to offer…but all offer a great place to have a grand time.   DAKOTA HARVEST BAKERS – Along with amazing French press coffee, Dakota Harvest has some of the best buns in town!  For sweets lovers like me, the ginormous caramel sticky buns and cinnamon rolls are definitely the way to go.  Although, I definitely wouldn’t turn down one of their butterscotch scones, raspberry white chocolate muffins or Special K bars.  Location: 17 North 3rd Street, 701-772-2100   CARIBOU COFFEE – This popular regional chain has a variety of tasty coffee creations to either warm you up or cool you down.  My top choices are the Northern Lite Latte and Iced Campfire Mocha.  They even have drinks for little ones including a yummy Hot Chocolate and Mango Orange Smoothie.  Location: 2400 South Washington Street, 701-775-3668   COFFEE COMPANY – This Grand Forks original is the only place in town that actually …

Summer temps are here and that means it is time for the Kegs!

Email
Untitled-3

Today’s blog is written by Grand Forks native and Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Julie Rygg.   Even though it has been open for a little while now, I have been waiting for the warm temps to hit the Fabulous Keg Drive In, located at 901 North 5th Street. I look forward to the sloppy Joe’s, fries, onion rings and cherry-lime Coke all winter.   The Kegs is a Grand Forks landmark built with two barrel-looking root beer kegs on each side. The prices are low, the staff is casual and friendly and the food is worthy of the wait. While I highly recommend the Joe’s and fries, other faves include the burgers, fried chicken and grilled cheese sandwiches. This is summer comfort food at its best.   If you want to hit the Keg’s, make sure you get there during the warm-weather months. They are open Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.   Do you love the Keg’s? What is you favorite item on the menu?

Good eats along the Boardwalk

Email
Untitled-3

Today’s blog is brought to us from travel and food writer/blogger Shel Zolkewich from Winnipeg. Shel is a great friend to Greater Grand Forks!   The other day, my sister-in-law Mandy asked a tough question. “What’s your favourite place to eat in Grand Forks?” I was speechless. Images of pan-fried walleye, towering burgers and lemongrass-scented pad Thai danced in my head. It was like trying to name which of your children you loved best. Impossible.   So in lieu of singling out just one, here are a couple from my ever-growing list of good eats in Grand Forks. This pair of stars sit on the east side of the Red River, on the Minnesota side on a stretch of restaurants called the Boardwalk. If there’s not a seat to be had at one, stroll over to the next one. You won’t be disappointed.   The Blue Moose   If you’re in search of a restaurant that brings the comfortable North Dakota/Minnesota feel to the table, The Blue Moose is it. It’s seldom we don’t visit the city without making a stop here.   For those who like to sample more than one flavour, the tapas menu is just for you. …

Greater Grand Forks Holiday Food

Email
Untitled-3

Today’s blog is written Shel Zolkewich, Manitoba blogger and friend to Greater Grand Forks.   There is no better way to kick off a weekend in Greater Grand Forks than with a visit to Rhombus Guys, a pizza joint in the classic style. Chances are things will be hopping, so saddle up at the bar and order a pitcher of Blue Moon for the gang while you wait. The menu will have your mouth watering. Meat lovers can do no better than the T-Rex, a ‘za loaded with bacon, beer, sausage and Canadian bacon. A long-time favorite is Louisiana Saturday Night featuring Cajun marinara, shrimp, sausage, red pepper and more. And a new fave is Wild Mushroom loaded with Parmesan, caramelized onion, mozza and of course, ‘shroom! The pizza is truly outstanding, the atmosphere is fun and friendly and it’s the kind of place you wish you had right in your own neighborhood. Kid friendly too!   The holidays call for that special night on the town with a premium dining experience. Without doubt, your destination is Sanders 1907. Those gleaming hardwood floors, cozy banquettes and eclectic collection of artwork make you want to stay a while, linger, soak it …
