SimplyGrand ways to romance your valentine

Email
Heart

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Don’t have any plans yet with your significant other? Well then, you best read on! Luckily, Greater Grand Forks has lots of great date options and here are my Top 5:   ON THE BOARDWALK.  Drive your date to the East Side for a flick and some food.  Start out the evening with an early showing of the critically acclaimed romantic musical, “La La Land” at River Cinema 15.  Afterward, journey across the street to Blue Moose.  Located on the popular Boardwalk dining district, it’s the perfect spot for a juicylicious burger, some sweet ‘n’ sassy Norwegian barbecue ribs or comfort food at its finest: homemade chicken pot pie.  Quench your thirst with a choice of close to fifty brews of beer in their Back Forty Bar. UPSCALE DOWNTOWN.  The Toasted Frog is the best place around to get pickled.  By that, I mean their martinis and deep-fried cheesy pickles will make your head spin.  Then stroll hand-in-hand down the block to Sky’s for a 5-star dinner with your 5-star sweetie that includes champagne cocktails, jumbo lump crab cakes, filet mignon with peppercorn sauce and a chocolate espresso ice cream cake drizzled with hot fudge …

And there’s always something new, from changing shops inside Columbia Mall and additions to the downtown scene to brand new businesses along the major thoroughfares and quaint boutiques tucked into historic buildings. We’ll always have our favourites of course, but it’s worth checking out a few new options. Maybe you can add some new favourites to your list!   The former Lakeview Inn & Suites on 32nd Avenue has a new name and a new look. It’s now the Best Western Harvest Inn & Suites. The common spaces and rooms have been completely renovated, offering a fresh and modern look. There’s free Wi-Fi, pillowtop beds, a 24-hour Market Pantry with snacks, beverages and last minute travel essentials along with a fitness center, spacious swimming pool, hot tub and free, full hot breakfast. The two-bedroom suite (one room with a king sized bed and one with two double beds) is perfect for families and includes a spacious living room.   If you haven’t visited Rhombus Guys Brewing Company yet, add …

Apps, taps and more at Bonzer’s

Email
Untitled-3

Last night I was lucky to have a meeting scheduled at Bonzer’s Sandwich Pub in downtown Grand Forks. Bonzer’s is a mainstay in Grand Forks and I have visited it many, many times over the years, but, admittedly, it has been awhile.   When I walked in I remembered its warm and cozy atmosphere. Immediately I was approached by a bartender that went through a list of their beer on tap. I chose a schooner of Dos Equis Azul, which did not disappoint. The array of tap beers ranged from domestics to a variety of imports as well as a local brew from Rhombus Brewery.   My meeting did not include dinner, but I have enjoyed many lunches and dinners at Bonzer’s. The Bonzer’s Chili Con Carne is definitely my favorite, but they also have a variety of hot and cold sandwiches, Mexican appetizers and sausages. Mr. Bonzer himself offers Jon’s Special, which is a juicy Polish sausage prepared in their family’s own blend of spices; served with Swiss cheese, pickle and mustard on rye. Don’t forget to add soup, salad or side…I hear the pickled eggs are pretty awesome!   I should mention all this scrumptious comfort food is offered a …

OVG_Image_012715

60,000 copies of the most informative and comprehensive guide about Greater Grand Forks has arrived at the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB). The guide has a fresh look while keeping the same level of quality, which the CVB has become known for, as well as the “simply grand” brand synonymous with Greater Grand Forks.   The guide will be distributed at local hotels and businesses; Minnesota and North Dakota statewide information centers; CAA offices in Manitoba; through One Fufillment (ND Tourism Division distribution program); University of North Dakota; Grand Forks Air Force Base and Grand Forks International Airport. Organizations such as Altru Health System, The Chamber and Economic Development Corporation use the guide in recruitment efforts as well. The CVB also distributes the guide in the Visitor Information Center (serving approximately 20,000 visitors per year), at trade shows, in event hospitality packets and visitor inquiry packets. The guide may be downloaded via visitgrandforks.com.   To pick up your copy, stop by the Visitor Information Center located at 4251 Gateway Drive (junction of Interstate 29 and Highway 2). Not local? Request a copy by sending an e-mail to info@visitgrandforks.com, calling 800.866.4566 or online.

Vintage Grand Forks

Email
Untitled-3

Today’s blog comes from Shel Zolkewich, a travel writer, blogger and friend to Greater Grand Forks.   If you’ve been visiting Grand Forks for a couple of decades or more, these destinations will be familiar. They’re tried and true places that have stood the test of time and garnered a loyal customer base. They’re all about quality, variety and deliciousness.   If you want to hang with locals, head to Speedway Grill & Bar. Tucked away on N 42nd Street, the spacious room is almost always packed with folks enjoying the blooming onion appetizer, prime rib special or two-for-one burger night.   The walleye dinner is a steal at $15. It comes with two sides (like all dinners), so be sure to include the baked beans which are a standout here. Dinners also come with a small loaf of warm bread—a nice touch. Get there before 6 pm and order a 25-ounce beer for $2.95. For me, a bowl of their outstanding chicken tortilla soup, a loaf of that warm bread and a big beer do the trick. But I seldom stop there because the ribs are just too good to pass up.   Occupying a corner of the Grand …

Summer in Grand Forks!

Email
Untitled-3

Today’s blog comes from Shel Zolkewich, travel writer from Manitoba and friend of Greater Grand Forks.   What could be better than summer sunshine and an outdoor swimming pool? Two outdoor swimming pools, that’s what! We often visit the massive outdoor pool at Sherlock Park in East Grand Forks (500 Block and 4th Avenue NW, East Grand Forks, Minnesota). Last fall, we stumbled upon a second outdoor pool. The Riverside Park and Pool (1801 North 1st Street, Grand Forks, North Dakota) is virtually identical to the one in Sherlock Park. A Saturday afternoon at either offers tan lines and endless summer fun.   Both pools are big! There seems to be room for everyone no matter how busy the day gets. Each also has a kiddie wading pool designed to keep the wee ones cool. There are some chairs and loungers around the pools but spreading your towel on the concrete works too. A small water slide at each pool offers a quick entry into the water. But the crowning glory of these pools are the springboards. Each has two perched over a deep section of the pool for fancy diving or amusing belly flops.   Adult admission is $3 …

Summer temps are here and that means it is time for the Kegs!

Email
Untitled-3

Today’s blog is written by Grand Forks native and Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director Julie Rygg.   Even though it has been open for a little while now, I have been waiting for the warm temps to hit the Fabulous Keg Drive In, located at 901 North 5th Street. I look forward to the sloppy Joe’s, fries, onion rings and cherry-lime Coke all winter.   The Kegs is a Grand Forks landmark built with two barrel-looking root beer kegs on each side. The prices are low, the staff is casual and friendly and the food is worthy of the wait. While I highly recommend the Joe’s and fries, other faves include the burgers, fried chicken and grilled cheese sandwiches. This is summer comfort food at its best.   If you want to hit the Keg’s, make sure you get there during the warm-weather months. They are open Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.   Do you love the Keg’s? What is you favorite item on the menu?
