Red Marauder shares her stories of being a Forx Roller Derby girl

Today we feature a guest blogger, Red Marauder, the newest addition to the Sugar Beaters-Forx Roller Derby, reflects on her experience joining the league…   You can’t fight who you are.  Or at least you shouldn’t – in my opinion anyway.  Sometimes it takes a while to figure out exactly who that is, but once you do and then start to spot things around you that fit you…well, then you need to employ a little carpe diem mentality, grab hold with both hands, hold on and enjoy the ride.   Roller Derby is one of those things for me – it just makes sense.  I heard about it a few years ago along with most of Grand Forks but was a little hesitant even though I knew I would absolutely love it.  I just wasn’t confident enough to do it.  Then a year later, I ran into a few of the derby girls at another event – still, I was hesitant.  It’s silly – I just wasn’t sure if my corporate-groomed, seemingly straight-laced self could do something like roller derby.  Finally – this winter I ran into them again, and the time was right. Roll over to the Alerus Center for roller derby action

I am looking forward to checking out Forx Roller Derby’s second bout and double header, “Hell and High Water”, in Grand Forks, this weekend.  Their first bout brought almost 1,200 fans to the Alerus Center to check out this new and growing sport in Grand Forks. Saturday’s event will be a little different from the first one, as some men’s teams have been invited to participate in a pre-bout. The women of the Grand Forks Sugar Beaters will host the Fargo Furies this Saturday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m., at the Alerus Center.  If you get your tickets in advance through the Alerus box office, they are $12/adult and $5/child 3 and over.  Tickets are available at the door too for $15/adult and $7/child 3 and over.  Children under three get in free.  There will be concessions, merchandise, free kids’ face painting and more. I may also check out the pre and post parties at TJ’s Sports Bar,  Starting at 5:30 p.m., a party bus will bring fans over to the Alerus Center and back to TJ’s after for drink specials, food and music. Forx Roller Derby is a new organization, which began in May 2010, when a group of …
