Summer fun for families

Email
Untitled-3

Today’s blog is written by Michaela Schell, a local writer and business professional.   As the years pass, I find myself looking more and more for kid friendly events that cater to our growing family. The more I search for things to do with my toddler, the more I find. The Grand Cities are extremely family friendly and offer lots of things to do with kids. The best part is a majority of them are free! As a stay-at-home mom, any kid event, whether it be a simple library story time or a big circus, that get us out of the house is a welcome occurrence.   So, here are just a few of the upcoming kid and family events happening in the Grand Cities this summer.   Movies in the Park (begins June 12) – The Grand Forks Park District hosts movies on an outdoor big screen at various parks around town. The kid-firendly shows are free and begin at sundown (around 9 p.m.). June 12 – The Muppets at University Park June 26 – Madagascar 2 at University Park July 16 – Harry Potter at Lincoln Park July 30 – Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs at Lincoln …

The Greater Grand Forks Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) wants to assist visitors in every way we can, so we are starting a new addition to our blog. We are asking members of our team as well as other members of the community to share with us their Five Favorites in the Forks. That way visitors can hear what the locals enjoy with some special hints. Today Nicole, who is the Sales & Services Coordinator at the CVB, is sharing her five picks for shopping, dining and things to do…   1.  Lincoln Drive Park – I have three kids, so outside play and activities are important to my family. Lincoln Drive Park coves 120 acres and park amenities include 4 shelters, park activities building, outdoor pleasure skating rink, 10 horseshoe courts, playground, restrooms, biking/walking trails, cross-country skiing groomed trails, boat launch, disc golf, dog park, sledding hill and sand volleyball court. Lincoln Drive Park is the location for many festivals including: Family Fun Night (July), Tour the Trails Bike Rally (September), Trail Trek 5k Family Run/Walk (September), Veteran’s Day X-Country Race (November), Christmas in the Park (Lions Club Tour of Lights – Nov/Dec) and Greenway Ski Days (February).   2.  …

AWW_Street

There are only two Art & Wine Walks (hosted by Greater Grand Forks Convention & Visitors Bureau and North Valley Arts Council) left in 2011, and one of them is tomorrow, Saturday, September 17! Everything kicks off at 1 p.m. at either the Blue Moose Bar & Grill in East Ground Forks or the GuestHouse Inn in Grand Forks. You can purchase a map for $15 (must be 21), which will include wine samples at all participating locations as well as a commemorative wine glass. At 5 p.m. the event wraps up with a champagne reception at the Empire Arts Center. There will be food, champagne and lots of great prizes (must be present to win)! Art & Wine Walk is a great way to get together with friends (and meet new ones) as well as view unique artworks from regional artists, shop at Greater Grand Forks businesses and experience a variety of wines. There are a number of businesses participating on both sides of the river including Bonzer’s, River Cities Jewelers, Dakota Harvest Bakers, Badman Design, Third Street Gallery, Mike’s Pizza, Amazing Grains, Lillian’s, Mamma Maria’s, O’Really’s and Level 10. Fun in the summer sun!

Email
Splashpark_Syd_Gracie_Sophia

It looks like our hot streak is going to continue in the Grand Cities this week with temps hitting the upper 80s and 90s!  While we should be extra careful when venturing out, but we we can still enjoy the summer and all the fun offered in Greater Grand Forks.  I like to make lists, so I have my list of inexpensive activitess to tackle with my family this week including: Turtle River State Park is located just 22 miles west of Grand Forks, and if your family likes fishing, nature trails or just enjoying the outdoors, this is the place for you.  I plan to grab a group of little ones and make it out for one of our “nature walks” this week! Riverside Park Swimming Pool is a very inexpensive way to spend a hot summer day.  Adults get in for only $3.25 and children 5-16 get in for $2.75.  Kids 4 and under are $1.50.  They have a snack area, water slide, kiddy pool and diving boards as well as a friendly life guard staff.  Make sure to have some time set aside if you are bringing the family, as I know my kids never want to …

ND Museum of Art Concerts in the Garden

This is going to be a great week in the Grand Cities!  I am looking forward to enjoying all that the town has to offer in the summer.  This is just a sample of my plans for the week… Tonight I have a meeting, but it won’t be without fun and great food, as it is taking place at the new restaurant, Jake’s.  Since I have only been there once, I am really excited to check out some of their food especially the Red Pepper Lavosh. On Tuesday I will grab the family and head over to the ND Museum of Art for the third installment of the 2011 Concerts in the Garden music series.  The Boston-based band and critically acclaimed, David Wax Museum, will headline while local artist, Xavier Pastrano, will open the show at 6 p.m.  Tickets are $5 in advance or $8 at the door, and there is great food including burgers and brats available in the museum’s garden.  With a weather prediction of mostly sunny and 75 degrees what more could we need? Since there is another good weather prediction for Wednesday, my husband and I plan to meet friends on the rooftop of Rhombus for …
