Today’s blog comes from Stacy Kusler, local runner & Grand Forks Wild Hog Marathon Planning Committee member.
While summer is in its prime here in the region, many community members are already setting their sites on a late September weekend when a full marathon will return to Grand Forks, the home of North Dakota’s ORIGINAL full marathon! The Wild Hog Marathon will be added to the lineup of races the weekend of September 23 and 24, 2016. It will join the Greater Grand Forks Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Half Marathon, the Subway Restaurants 10k, the Alerus 5k and the Crary Real Estate Kids and Family Fun Run. Runners will also have the option of pairing up with friends, family or co-workers to compete together in the full or half marathon by registering for one of the Stray Media Group Relay options.
As race organizers prepare to make this 26.2 mile leap, it is important to increase our community involvement both in terms of volunteers and support. With the marathon, our runners will be out on the course longer and additional volunteer support on the course in the form of aid stations and intersection supervision will be needed to ensure runner safety. A full marathon is physically taxing, to say the least and safety of the participants is the number one priority of race organizers. Another priority is runner satisfaction. We want to make sure we can showcase our great community to runners from both near and far to guarantee an enjoyable time. If your house or business is located on or near any of the race courses, we encourage you to step outside and cheer for runners passing by. Make a day of it and gather other people at your home or business while you grill out, drink your morning coffee on a lawn chair and maybe slice up some oranges or bananas to hand out on the course. Cowbells are encouraged during marathons!
Bringing a full marathon back to Grand Forks is a big task and one that can create a lot of fun throughout the area.
