North Dakota Museum of Art announces

Exhibition Reception and Gallery Talk by featured artist Kandy G. Lopez

Thursday, January 22, 4:30 – 6 pm

Please join us for a Closing Reception with Gallery Talk by featured artist Kandy G. Lopez on Thursday, January 22, 4:30 – 6 pm. The gallery talk and reception, including hors d’oeuvres and beverages, are free and open to the public. Parking is also free and available in front of and adjacent to the Museum. The exhibition, "Icons, Archetypes, and Portraits: From the Mythic to the Everyday," which includes her work, "Mecca," is only on display through January 25.

Lopez has had a banner year with recent solo exhibitions opening in Paris and New York and we are honored that she will join us in Grand Forks to speak about her artwork followed by Q&A. An additional treat that evening is the opportunity to meet her daughter Mecca, the subject of Lopez’s powerful and deeply personal portrait featured in our current exhibition “Icons, Archetypes, and Portraits: From the Mythic to the Everyday.”

Kandy G. Lopez (b. 1987, New Jersey) is a multidisciplinary portrait artist exploring cultural identity, representation, and power through fiber, painting, glass, and mixed media. Born to Dominican parents, she draws from her experience navigating multiple cultural landscapes. As an Afro-Caribbean visual artist, Lopez is eager to be challenged materialistically and metaphorically when representing marginalized individuals that inspire and move her. Her works are created out of the necessity to learn something new about her people and culture. Lopez is interested in developing a nostalgic dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. If she’s not learning from her materials and how it affects the message, it’s not worth creating.

About the Exhibition: "Icons, Archetypes, and Portraits: From the Mythic to the Everyday" features artwork by artists from around the globe utilizing a wide array of media from painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, and textiles. The exhibition poses a fundamental question: how does a work of art conjure presence of a human subject? While portraiture often accomplishes this task by presenting a faithful visual likeness of a subject, other artworks in this exhibition approach this question more obliquely by invoking presence through materials associated with the subject—such as hair, bone, jewelry, or articles of clothing.

The North Dakota Museum of Art is located at 261 Centennial Drive on the campus of the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Exhibition hours are weekdays, 9 am - 5 pm and weekends, 1 - 5 pm. Admission to the Museum is free of charge, donations welcome. For more information, 701-777-4195 or ndmoa@ndmoa.com.
