Grand Forks Spitfires: Building Something Bigger Than Softball

Creating a new franchise required much more than assembling a roster. Behind the scenes, a dedicated ownership group, front office staff, coaches, interns, and game-day employees worked together to build the organization from scratch. Ownership partners Ryan Voz and Marc Jerzak played a critical role in recruiting top collegiate talent from across the country, bringing athletes from major conferences and universities together in Grand Forks for the summer. On the field, coaches Jackie Albrecht and Aaron Alvarez helped establish the culture and competitive foundation of the inaugural team. Off the field, interns and staff members worked tirelessly to organize promotions, sponsorship activations, community appearances, and fan experiences that helped bring the Spitfires brand to life. The organization is also supported by generous host families who welcome players into their homes throughout the summer, providing them with a true "home away from home" while they compete hundreds of miles from their college campuses. These relationships often become one of the most meaningful parts of the Northwoods League experience for players and families alike.

The Spitfires were created to deliver the feel of professional sports while remaining affordable, accessible, and family-friendly. Every game at Albrecht Field features a combination of elite softball, on-field contests, interactive promotions, giveaways, and nonstop entertainment. Throughout the inaugural season, fans packed the ballpark for exciting theme nights and special events including Fireworks Night, Medora Monday, and the America 250 Celebration. Between innings, fans can participate in on-field games, watch special performances, and enjoy the energy that has become a trademark of the Spitfires experience. Partnerships with local businesses and sponsors from across the Grand Forks community have helped make these experiences possible, creating memorable moments for fans of all ages. The organization believes people may come for softball, but they return because of the memories made at the ballpark.

The Spitfires' identity is deeply connected to the Grand Forks community. The team's name and mascot were selected through a community-wide contest that encouraged fans to submit ideas and vote on their favorites, ensuring the organization would reflect the city it represents. The name "Spitfires" pays tribute to Grand Forks' rich aviation heritage and the influence of the University of North Dakota's nationally recognized aviation programs. The partnership with UND and the support of Dave Albrecht have been instrumental in the team's success, allowing the Spitfires to call Albrecht Field home and providing one of the premier softball facilities in the region. Throughout their inaugural season, players and staff have participated in youth clinics, community appearances, sponsor events, and local celebrations, further strengthening the connection between the team and the city. As attendance has continued to grow and memories have been created, the Spitfires have proven they are about much more than softball. They are building a community gathering place, creating lifelong memories for fans, and establishing a tradition that will continue to grow for years to come.
