Nestled in the northeastern corner of North Dakota, Pembina Gorge is a breathtaking sanctuary for nature lovers, adventurers and anyone seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. This hidden gem offers a unique blend of rugged landscapes, rich biodiversity and outdoor recreation opportunities that make it a must-visit destination. Let’s dive into what makes Pembina Gorge so special and why it deserves a spot on your day trip bucket list.
Pembina Gorge is a geological marvel, carved over thousands of years by the Pembina River. The gorge spans over 12,500 acres of pristine wilderness, featuring rolling hills, lush forests and dramatic cliffs. The views are nothing short of spectacular, especially during the fall when the foliage transforms into a vibrant tapestry of reds, oranges and yellows.
The area is also home to one of the largest undisturbed river valleys in North Dakota, making it a haven for wildlife and plant species. Over 480 species of vascular plants, including rare orchids, thrive here, alongside deer, foxes and countless bird species. It’s a paradise for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.
Pembina Gorge isn’t just a natural treasure, it’s also steeped in history. The area has been inhabited for thousands of years, with evidence of Native American settlements and early European explorers. Visitors can learn about the region’s cultural significance through interpretive signs and guided tours.
Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or someone who enjoys a leisurely stroll, Pembina Gorge has something for everyone. Here are some of the activities you can enjoy.
HIKING & BIKING
The gorge boasts over 30 miles of trails that cater to all skill levels. From easy walks along the river to challenging climbs up the bluffs, there’s a trail for every adventurer. Mountain bikers will also find plenty of thrilling routes to explore.
CANOEING & KAYAKING
The Pembina River offers a serene setting for paddling. Glide through calm waters surrounded by towering cliffs and dense greenery and let the soothing sounds of nature wash over you.
HORSEBACK RIDING
For a unique way to experience the scenery, saddle up and get ready to explore! With its extensive trail system, the Pembina Gorge State Recreation Area provides a one-of-a-kind riding experience with epic views. Please note that all the trails except Lady Slipper are also open OHVs, bikers, and hikers. Lady Slipper Trail is a non-motorized trail open to bikers, hikers, and horseback riders only. Equestrian riders need to purchase a horse pass. Daily and annual options are available and are required per horse. Permits are available for purchase in the office or online. The money generated from these fees goes towards maintaining horse trails.
WINTER FUN
When the snow falls, Pembina Gorge transforms into a winter wonderland. Cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are popular activities that allow visitors to enjoy the area year-round.
