Whether you're seeking tranquility or adventure, Forks offers a variety of recreational activities to make your summer unforgettable.
PADDLE YOUR DAY AWAY
The Red River and its tributaries provide the perfect backdrop for a day on the water. Paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing are popular activities that allow you to soak in the natural beauty while enjoying a gentle workout. Rentals are available at Boathouse on the Red, making it easy for beginners and seasoned paddlers alike to explore the calm waters. Don’t forget to pack or pick up some yummy picnic fare and take a riverside break!
SCENIC STROLLS, RUNS & ROLLS
Greater Grand Forks boasts an impressive network of trails that cater to walkers, joggers, inline skaters and cyclists. The Greenway Trail System is a local favorite, offering over 20 miles of paved paths that wind through parks, along the Red River, and into the heart of the city. For a more leisurely experience, visit Lincoln Drive Park or University Park, where vibrant flowers and towering trees create a picturesque setting. For those who are more on the competitive side, Forks offers numerous marathons throughout the summer. Two popular ones coming up soon include the Rollin’ on the River Inline Marathon (August 16) and Grand Forks 10 Mile/10K (August 23) and 5K (August 22). Launched in 2019, Grand Rides is a community-driven bike share program designed to make cycling accessible to everyone. Managed by the Downtown Development Association, this program features 60 regular pedal bikes stationed at various locations across Grand Forks, East Grand Forks and the University of North Dakota campus. The program is powered by the Movatic app, which makes renting a bike as easy as a few taps on your smartphone. Best of all? It is free of charge! For more information, go to Grand Rides online.
UNEXPECTED ESCAPES
For those who crave a deeper connection with nature, there are plenty of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Explore Kellys Slough National Wildlife Refuge, a short drive from west on Highway 2, where avid birdwatchers can spot a variety of species. Or venture to Turtle River State Park, where hiking trails, waterfalls and shaded picnic spots offer a peaceful retreat from the summer heat.
FAMILY FUN UNDER THE SUN
Looking for activities the whole family can enjoy? The Grand Forks Park District hosts a variety of summer events, from outdoor movie nights and community festivals to programs and activities for all ages. When it comes to playgrounds, you can’t beat Sherlock Park or Ali’s Boundless Playground in Sertoma Park. If you don’t mind getting wet, University and Elks Parks have cool splash pads. For those who like to dive right in, pools at Elks, Riverside and Sherlock Parks were made just for you.
REELING & RELAXING
Anglers will find plenty of spots to cast a line around Greater Grand Forks. The Red River and Red Lake River are both known for their catfish, while nearby lakes and ponds at Turtle River State Park, Larimore Dam and Ryan Lake offer opportunities to fill your net. Even if fishing isn’t your thing, these serene locations are ideal for unwinding with a good book or simply soaking up the sun.
ZEN & SERENITY
The Japanese Garden at Sertoma Park is a unique treasure, celebrated as the only garden of its kind in North Dakota. Its creation was inspired by the sister-city relationship between Grand Forks and Awano, Japan (now part of Kanuma City). This cultural connection brought authentic Japanese elements to the park, including traditional landscaping, symbolic features, and even artifacts sent directly from Japan. As you step into the garden, you’re greeted by designed pathways, greenery, and calming water features. Every detail, from the placement of stones to the gentle curves of the bridges, reflects the principles of Japanese garden design: balance, simplicity, and harmony with nature. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a picnic lunch or just unwind and collect your thoughts.
PICKLEBALL PARADISE
Pickleball is more than just a sport – it’s a social experience. Played on a smaller court with a paddle and a perforated plastic ball, it’s easy to learn, low-impact, and incredibly fun. Its accessibility makes it a favorite for families, retirees, and competitive players alike. The Grand Cities Pickleball Club is the heart of the local pickleball scene. With both indoor and outdoor courts, the club hosts regular tournaments, clinics, and open play sessions. It’s a fantastic place to meet other players and improve your skills. To find out more, visit GrandCitiesPickleball.com. Other locations to take a swing at are the YMCA, Choice Health and Fitness, Abbott Sports Complex, Optimist Park and O’Leary Park.
EVENING ADVENTURES
As the day winds down, our Forks continue to shine. Head to the Greenway or Riverside Dam for breathtaking sunset views over the water. Once the stars come out, find a quiet spot away from city lights to marvel at the night sky…perhaps even catch a meteor shower or awesome Northern Lights display, if you’re lucky! The wide-open spaces of this region make for some of the best stargazing experiences in the world.
