Putting the excitement on ice

I must admit, I’ve grown up a big basketball fan.  Even though that is still my first love, when I finally experienced Division I college hockey live, I was hooked!  If you’ve never been, Grand Forks offers plenty of chances to see all the action up close.   Under head coach Brian Idalski, watch the University of North Dakota Women’s Hockey team this season as they skate, pass and shoot their way to victory.  With several standouts like Andrea Dalen and Josefine Jakobsen returning, UND is sure to see playoff action again this season.   The University of North Dakota Men’s Hockey team, with veteran coach and former UND hockey handout Dave Hakstol at the helm, is looking to end the season atop the newly formed NCHC.  The whole crowd will jump to its feet after every goal and with future NHL stars like Nick Schmaltz and Luke Johnson on the roster, you’ll be cheering nonstop.      Home ice advantage also means fans get to enjoy all the luxuries of the magnificent Ralph Engelstad Arena, including its granite floor concourses, plush leather seats, amazing sound system and state-of-the-art jumbo screens that highlight every second of the action.  If a variety …

Simply Grand Fall Fun

Japanese Garden at Sertoma Park

Weather predictions for this week in Greater Grand Forks are good with beautiful fall temperatures and sunny skies, so I highly recommend you get out and enjoy some of the recreational opportunities offered here including our gorgeous and fun parks. Japanese Garden – This lovely garden, located in Sertoma Park, was a gift from the residents of Awano Japan to commemorate the flood of 1997. Its natural look features the beauty of rocks, water, hills, trees as well as the three granite Japanese-style lanterns. Ali’s Boundless Playground – Local teen Ali Karpenko was born with spina bifida, and her dream of a community playground for children with and without disabilities was realized in 2009 in Sertoma Park. Here every child can play side by side at his or her own ability level. Greenway – The Greenway is 2,200 acres of natural space lining the Red River and Red Lake River as they flow through Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. The picturesque urban space offers countless recreational, cultural, historical and natural experiences. These recreational areas give you just a taste of what is available in Greater Grand Forks. There are so many specialty parks available year-round for a variety of …

UND Fighting Sioux headed to the NCAA Frozen Four

Fighting Sioux Hockey

There’s still one more NCAA “Final Four” to take care of this season, but this one is on ice.  The Men’s Ice Hockey Division I Frozen Four takes place this weekend in St. Paul, MN.  While the first semifinal game will produce a team only making their second championship appearance, the second semifinal game produces a game rich in hockey history with Grand Forks’ very own UND Fighting Sioux. The Sioux have made 20 appearances at the Frozen Four and taken home the championship title five times.  Already the Sioux have had a winning year, which includes capturing the McNaughton Cup as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association’s (WCHA) regular season champions, they then went on to win the WCHA’s Final Five Championship Broadmoor trophy and continued with taking the NCAA Division Midwest Regional Championship. While many locals may head off to see the games in person, there will be plenty of opportunity to celebrate and cheer on the Sioux right here in Grand Forks.  The Ralph Engelstad Arena, which has been referred to as the most opulent college hockey arena in the US and home of the Sioux, will be hosting a Frozen Four viewing party for the semifinal game.  …
