Time to strap on the sneaks (or inline skates) and take to the streets (or river)…several Greater Grand Forks outdoor athletic events are right around the corner! Whether a novice or old pro, we have the perfect race for you.   May 6: RED RIVER RUNNERS 1980s FUN RUN –> Join the Red River Runners at 8 AM, in Lincoln Drive Park, for a rad fun run! Dig out your best neon and get ready for a most excellent 5K with some of your fellow bodacious runners. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes and light refreshments served. redriverrunnersgf@gmail.com   May 6: DOWNTOWN DERBY RUN –> Beginning at 1 PM, in George Lee Park, this 1.25 mile Kentucky Derby distance race [individual or five-man relay team] is designed to celebrate spring. Red Marauder shares her stories of being a Forx Roller Derby girl

Today we feature a guest blogger, Red Marauder, the newest addition to the Sugar Beaters-Forx Roller Derby, reflects on her experience joining the league…   You can’t fight who you are.  Or at least you shouldn’t – in my opinion anyway.  Sometimes it takes a while to figure out exactly who that is, but once you do and then start to spot things around you that fit you…well, then you need to employ a little carpe diem mentality, grab hold with both hands, hold on and enjoy the ride.   Roller Derby is one of those things for me – it just makes sense.  I heard about it a few years ago along with most of Grand Forks but was a little hesitant even though I knew I would absolutely love it.  I just wasn’t confident enough to do it.  Then a year later, I ran into a few of the derby girls at another event – still, I was hesitant.  It’s silly – I just wasn’t sure if my corporate-groomed, seemingly straight-laced self could do something like roller derby.  Finally – this winter I ran into them again, and the time was right. Celebrate the night 2011 and ring in 2012!

Are you looking for something to do on New Year’s Eve? Why not ring in the New Year at the Alerus Center with Celebrate the Night. Celebrate the Night is an alcohol-free event for the entire family. The event returns to the Alerus Center for another great year, with all events held under one roof. Celebrate the Night includes entertainment and activities for all ages. Food and drink will be available throughout the evening. The Alerus Center will have concession stands open for the event. They will have a variety of sandwiches, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks available for purchase. Wristbands for entry to the event are on sale at Hugo’s and Valley Dairy stores in the Grand Forks area. Advance cost for the wrist bands are $5 for all ages. The wrist bands will be $8 at the door. Advanced price wrist bands are also available online here. Search for Celebrate the Night. Print your receipt, bring it along on New Year’s Eve, and receive your wristband at the door. Volunteers are needed to help with the event. Volunteer duties may include selling wrist bands, working the doors for individual rooms, helping with the inflatable games or a variety of other duties as needed for the …

It has been a busy summer in the Grand Cities; school has started and the UND students have all moved back, and we are on the heels of a fabulous Grand Forks weekend with the first-ever Rollin’ on the River Inline Marathon (the Convention & Visitors Bureau was the presenting sponsor by the way) and a record breaking attendance for the last of the 2011 three-part music series, Blues on the Red.  It may have some asking what do we do now?  The answer is PLENTY!  I am going to just give you a brief taste of some of the great events coming up (details and more events can be found on our Calendar of Events) in September: -UND Football season opener vs. Drake September 1 at the Alerus Center (don’t miss tailgating, as the presenting sponsor, the Convention & Visitors Bureau is giving away a great prize package) -Friday Night Races at the River Cities Speedway through September 16 -Outdoor Farmer’s Market in Town Square through September 24 -Choice Financial 10K Fun Run/Walk Setember 10 -Tour de Forks Bike Ride & Walk in Lincoln Drive Park on September 11 -AudioBody at the Chester Fritz on September 11 -Art & …
