SimplyGrand ways to spend Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching.

Don’t have any plans yet with your significant other? Well then, you best read on! Luckily, Greater Grand Forks has lots of great date options and here are my Top 5:

Lace up the skates and begin your day with a twirl or two through the Town Square outdoor ice rink. The venue may be cool but some freshly brewed coffee or hot chocolate, from right down the block at Urban Stampede, will warm y’all up straightaway. Peruse through our unique Downtown boutiques and art galleries…maybe even stop by Signature Jewelers or Badman Design and see if there may be a form of bling that makes her heart go zing. Take a more casual approach for dinner with some excellent Scotch eggs, in-house made craft beer and a fun game of foosball or pinball at Rhombus Guys Brewing Company.

Cross the bridge into East Grand Forks for a romantic movie and some ‘heart’y food. Start out the evening with an earlier showing at River Cinema 15, perhaps in one of the theaters featuring heated recliner seats. When the story ends, let the canoodling (over noodles) begin…journey across the street to The Blue Moose Bar & Grill where knotty is nice! This cozy dining spot has a log cabin-like interior and happens to serve some of the most carbolicious dishes around like the Spicy Dragon Noodles, Chicken Tri-Tortellini, Bourbon Street Pasta and Mac & Cheese Attack: penne noodles tossed in a four-cheese sauce, then topped with cojack before baking to an ooey gooey golden brown.

If you really wanna woo your boo, rent the penthouse or one of the sweet suites at Canad Inns Destination Center. Get wild and share the Old West Dakota room with your partner or perhaps a tropical getaway in the South Seas suite is more to your liking. Since all of them have Jacuzzis, you’ll probably prefer to just order up room service from one of Canad’s three restaurants, so you can wine ‘n dine while you dip.

The Toasted Frog is the best place around to get pickled. By that, I mean their martinis and deep-fried cheesy pickles are so amazing, they’ll make your head (and taste buds) spin! Upon exiting the Frog, grab your date’s hand, then stroll down 3rd Street, over and up to Sky’s on the 2nd floor of 322 DeMers. Treat your five-star sweetie to a five-star dinner that includes classic cocktails, crab cakes, a king or queen cut of herb roasted prime rib and an out of this world blondie brownie that comes crowned with ice cream and a decadent sea salt caramel sauce.

Hangout on the Southside and get fresh at Vinyl Taco. VT is the perfect spot for hot tunes and eats + cool cocktail creations. Listen to some of your favorite songs from the good old days when LPs were all the rage. Their freshly made guacamole and tortilla chips, with a strawberry margarita chaser, make the perfect starter. Follow that up with some yummy street tacos: I highly recommend the carne asada, chicken tinga and shrimp a la parilla on corn tortillas. For the perfect ending, head next door to Crooked Pint and check out the sweetest Lucy in town! The Pint’s master dessert makers take a large chocolate-chunk cookie, stuff it with cream cheese and then top it off with vanilla ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauces, plus a big dollop of whipped cream.
