Adelphi Fountain

Artist: Unknown

Commissioned by: University of North Dakota

Installation: 1905

Medium: Cast iron on a concret and stone base

UND's first student organization, the Adelphi Literary Society, presented the Adelphi Fountain to the University in 1905. It was the first purely decorative fixture on the campus, and thanks to a gift from the Hopper-Danley estate, it was restored in 2007. Guided by early photographs, the artists created new figures of the Oracle of Delphi and three Muses, which represent several cultures including a Lakota woman. One holds a sheaf of wheat, another a scroll, another a lyre.
