As part of the Northwoods League Softball, a collegiate summer league that provides elite softball players from across the country the opportunity to continue developing their skills and showcase their talents during the summer, the Spitfires represent a new chapter for both the league and the Grand Forks community. The team was brought to life by owner John Bollinger and a group of local investors after the success of Bollinger's other North Dakota organizations, including the Bismarck Larks, Minot Hot Tots, and Minot Honeybees. After seeing the impact those teams had on their communities, Bollinger sought to expand the reach of Northwoods League baseball and softball to Grand Forks.
